Depicted is Mary, mother of God, expecting. Behind her the chapel wich it is said to enshrine the Ark of the Covenant, in the City of Axum – Ethiopia. Due to need of renovation a second chapel was build as close-by as possible, to wich the Ark was then moved.
This painting combines many aspects of classical christian iconography and symbolic meaning with more contemporary symbolism, like the stork wich does not only emphasize the arrival of a baby, he is also traveller between Africa and Europe.
